Dr.S.Shankar M.E., Ph.D (IIT Madras)

Dr.S.Shankar earned his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master's Degree in Engineering Design from Bharathiar University in 2001 and 2002, respectively, achieving University Rank I in Engineering Design. In 2008, he completed his Ph.D. in Machine Design / Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. Following this, he worked as a Senior Engineer in R&D at CONVERTEAM EDC Pvt Ltd in Chennai/USA for two and a half years. Since 2010, he has been with Kongu Engineering College, serving as an Associate Professor until 2016, and then as a Professor in Mechatronics Engineering. From July 2019 to November 2023, he was the Head of the R&D Cell, and from November 2023 to April 2024, he served as the Head of the Mechatronics Engineering department. In June 2024, he founded the "ProMind Research Academy" to train faculty in pursuing quality research. He has published over 195 international journal papers indexed in SCOPUS/SCI, including works with ASME, Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, Springer, World Scientific, SAGE, and Inderscience Publishers. His research interests span computational contact mechanics, ergonomics, environmental health and safety, biomechanics, tribology, FEM, and composites. He has been the principal investigator for 11 R&D projects totaling over 115 Lakhs, including UGC Major Research Project, AICTE RPS project, SERB Fast Track Young Scientist Scheme, DST R&D, ICMR R&D, DHR R&D, and IE(I). He holds two granted patent as an inventor. Under his supervision, 7 Ph.D. students, 26 PG students, and 40 UG batches have submitted their theses. Currently, he is guiding 1 Ph.D. scholar in related research areas. He is a member of MYTRIBOS, ISTE, IPHA, TSI, and IEI. His accolades include the AICTE Career Award for Young Teachers, ISTE Best Thesis in M.Tech Mechanical Engineering, Young Engineer Award for Mechanical Engineering 2012-2013 from IE(I) - Institute of Engineers (INDIA) Kolkata, Best Engineering Academics - IE(I) Erode, NPTEL SPOC Award, Best Researcher awards, and Overall Best Faculty Awards from Kongu Engineering College. In 2022, 2023 and 2024, he was listed among the "TOP 2% SCIENTISTS IN THE WORLD" in the Stanford-Elsevier database. His Google Scholar metrics include an h-index of 34, an i-10 index of 920, and a total of 5218 citations. He has delivered over 200 lectures at various institutes on topics such as problem formulation techniques, identifying refereed journals, paper writing methods, citation index, ergonomics in design, and computational biomechanics. Under his leadership as Head of the R&D Cell (2019-2023), Kongu Engineering College saw a significant increase in Scopus publications from 200 to 1040 per year and SCI publications from 160 to 400 per year. Additionally, the average value of R&D project proposals increased from 1 crore to 2.5 crores per year. As Head of the Mechatronics department, he successfully led the department to receive 6 years of NBA accreditation under Tier I.
